The separatists seized the Donetsk Regional State Administration. The capture of Donetsk by separatists, despite active opposition from the majority of the population, took place in April 2014. Donetsk came under the control of the Donetsk People's Republic terrorist group. Donetsk became the center of this group. As a result of fighting between separatist units and the armed forces of Ukraine, as well as numerous acts of sabotage, the city suffered significant damage. A large number of residents were forced to leave the city.
