Avdiivka is a city in Ukraine, Donetsk region. Located 13 km north of Donetsk, in the upper reaches of the river Skotovata; Seversky Donets basin). Railway station. Avdiivka is a part of the Donetsk-Makeyevka agglomeration, and the positions around it allow controlling the northern suburbs of Donetsk and Yasynuvata, the southern suburbs of Horlivka, as well as the M04 Donetsk-Horlivka highway. In addition to the tactical importance of the city, it also has one of the largest coke plants in Europe - Avdiivka Coke Plant. Avdiivka, which has been under the control of pro-Russian militants since the end of April 2014, was released by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on July 28, 2014. Until January 21, 2015, the attention of pro-Russian forces was focused on the Donetsk airport, after the destruction of which the suburbs of Avdiivka began to be attacked - the country sector, the ventilation shaft of the Butivka-Donetsk mine and the industrial zone on the southern outskirts of the city. Fighting for the industrial zone peaked in the spring of 2016, after which the Ukrainian army gradually pushed pro-Russian forces south to the highway. At the end of January 2017, Ukrainian forces approached the highway and the Yasynuvata interchange directly, taking it under fire control.
